The canton of Valais is a hiking region par excellence with its 46 peaks of more than 4000 m in altitude located within it. The mountains of the Valais belong to different massifs, the most important of which are the Valaisan Alps, the Pennine Alps, the Lepontine Alps, the Uranus Alps and the Bernese Alps. Among the most popular peaks in the canton are the Matterhorn, which rises to 4478 m, and Pointe Dufour (4634 m). Valais also has 80 glaciers, representing 52 billion m3 of ice and two thirds of the Swiss ice and one third of the ice in the Alps.
